Iga Świątek is the first Polish tennis player to hold the distinction of No. 1 player in the world, after defeating Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland and advancing to the third round of the Miami Open. Currently ranked world No. 2 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), she will officially take over as the new WTA world No. 1 when the tournament ends and the rankings are updated on April 4. With her second-round win in the Miami Open on Friday, Świątek, the 20-year-old tennis player from Raszyn, Poland, takes over the top spot in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings from Australian Ashleigh Barty who, a few days ago, decided to retire and asked to be removed from the rankings. Świątek is the youngest player in the top ten of the WTA rankings. Seeded second in the Miami tournament, Świątek, like the other top players, began her matches in the second round, where she soundly defeated Golubic 6-2, 6-0.
